In this video of 3 minutes and 30 seconds, we’ll see how coffee waste is solved by a Berlin-based start-up, Kaffeeform, creating coffee cups from recycled coffee grounds.

Maybe the first thing you want in the morning is a cup of Coffee.  But have you ever thought about the waste by caffeine? In the US alone, 120 billion disposable coffee cups are used every year. It’s not only the cups and the lids that are creating waste, But the used up coffee grounds also contributes to waste produced.

Germany is one of the largest coffee consuming countries in Europe. An average person drinks about 14 pounds of beans every year. About 99% of paper, plastic, and foam coffee cups end up in the trash and once they are in the trash, even paper cups can take over 20 years to decompose.

Moreover Coffee grounds are usually dumped into common waste and sent to landfills where they emit methane which causes global warming.

To solve this, kaffeeform makes reusable mugs from recycled coffee grounds and the idea for it first came about in 2009.

What are the processes of making recycled coffee cups from Coffee grounds?

•Every day a team of cyclists usually collects around 110 pounds of used coffee grounds from coffee shops across Berlin.

• Then the collected coffee-grounds are sorted and cleaned in the kaffeeform’s workshop. They are then transported to another facility, where they are dried with plant fibers, beechwood grains, and natural resins.

•Once the new coffee ground granulate has been mixed together, it gets shaped under heat and pressure.  It takes about 6 cups of coffee grounds to produce one espresso cup and saucer, resulting in a final product that is 40% coffee grounds and 100% biodegradable.

These mugs and cups are then used in 20 coffee shops in Berlin and 150 vendors across Europe. The company is not limited to make coffee mugs but hopes to shape coffee grounds into lifestyle products and furniture for a clean and green future.
