The first plastic Bakelite was originally invented in 1907 but by 1960 plastics especially polyethylene became very cheap and were easy to make. Very soon after 1960 plastic bags became pretty much popular as it was made and been marketed as a single-use item.
It is estimated that the US alone throws away 100 billion plastic bags annually from which only a fraction gets recycled in short term most of these get into waterways which leads them to the ocean and after that to the five gyres and there it takes them 500 years to degrade.
 What can we do:
 We can reduce plastic use whenever where ever possible.
 We should re-use plastic where ever possible.
Instead of plastic bags use paper, cloth, or any other environment friendly.
Above all think about nature and follow the 3 R’S: reduce, reuse, recycle plastic.
